Distribution and selling of the “LIFE” Yoghurt

Distribution and selling of the “LIFE” Yoghurt

After the production of yoghurt at the Life Dairy factory in Katete, the yoghurt is distributed and sold in different selling points in different places. Such selling points are (small) shops, canteen of schools and hospitals in the Mukono district. They sell afterwards the yoghurt to their customer at a slightly higher price.

The distribution of yoghurt is not regular, because it depends on the weather (rain means very bad roads), the electricity and on the demand. The transportation of yoghurt to Nkokonjeru, a bigger village near Katete, occurs with boda-boda (motorcycle) and to Mukono with matatu (minibus-taxi), without refrigeration.

A permanent problem in Uganda is the electricity; it is not always guaranteed. Sometimes the power is off for a few minutes, hours or even for the whole afternoon or day. The situation is better in the town of Mukono than in Nkokonjeru. Furthermore in Katete, where the yoghurt factory is located, no electricity is available in the village. The government is working on it and this summer the population of Katete is going to have access to electricity. This is a step forward towards a better future! The electricity and the price are main reasons why the yoghurt is not sold in small villages like Katete.

How does a distribution and selling of yoghurt in Nkokonjeru looks like? Follow my description and look at the pictures! Paolo (one of the worker at the Life Dairy factory) prepare a big milk can with the produced yoghurt bags and put it on his boda-boda (picture 1). The journey to Nkokonjeru can start; it takes around 10 minutes on a “bad” road (2). Now, what is the definition of a small shop for you? I think everyone has another imagination. In Uganda small shops (size of around one Swiss bedroom) are situated on the road and sell a lot of different things, mainly food stuff (3, 4, and 5). In smaller villages, the shops are incorporated in the house and the owner of the house is also the vendor. Back to the distribution, Paolo knows in which shop he could sell the yoghurt, so he goes there and asks the vendor if she/he is interested in yoghurt. If yes, Paolo give her/him the desired number of yoghurt and receive the money (6, 7 and 8). That’s it!
