Continuous improvement at the Life Dairy Ltd.

Whenever I’m in Katete, I try to improve the hygiene and quality aspects of the yoghurt factory! The main challenge remains the communication with the workers. They can’t speak English and everything has to be discussed previously with the manager, then he reports the main points to the workers. Even though I learn a bit of Luganda in these few months, it’s difficult to have a conversation about project related items with the workers, because my vocabulary is limited.

Here is a short description of the most important improvements of the factory: The hand wash system was (finally) installed and an introduction to the worker was hold (picture 1). To keep order in the factory I put papers on the wall for the different cans, with the labels “empty milk cans”, “yoghurt cans”, and “distribution cans” (2). Soon the factory will have a shelf, which will be used to store the cleaning material and as well as other material used for the yoghurt production. Furthermore I prepared sealed papers with the yoghurt making process, whereby a big version is written in English and every process step has an appropriate picture and a small version is written in Luganda (3). The big table was subdivided into three parts; the working area and areas for the books and the material (4). In addition the checklist and the record book are discussed continuously with the manager in order to optimize the book keeping system. These are small changes at the factory which are important in order to have (and to maintain!) a hygienic environment and high quality products.
